Welcome to WOTW!

About Us and WEBSITE POLICY

Welcome

Come join  Watchers of the Wilderness and explore the great outdoors  with fellow hikers. We explore the various trails in the Sipsey Wilderness and others in Bankhead National Forest with an occasional field trip to other locations. Hikes  are  generally three to six miles in length with an average elevation gain of up to 1,000 feet.

We are not rangers, volunteers, or a formal organization. We are a network connected by our Facebook group and by this site as a social group that brings people together for getting out into the wilderness. We will do stewardship events where we clean the forest of trash, restore campsites,  and teach some basic techniques used in backpacking and hiking.

What’s your skill level? Only you can determine that, but we all start somewhere. We will schedule hikes, and you can ask us  what fitness level  and equipment you need to comfortably enjoy yourself.

We believe in the  Leave No Trace Principles that were developed by www.LNT.org

We will promote sharing the beauty of our public forest landmarks by providing GPS coordinates and what we believe to be safe routes with difficulty ratings.
